One of Australia’s favourite authors, Peter Carey was successful this year in winning the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction under the 2007 NSW Premier’s Literary Award for “Theft: A Love Story”.
The Miles Franklin Literary Award winner “Carpentaria” is a wonderful book set in northern Australia with a story interwoven with the culture of the area and the struggle with mining giants. Written by indigenous author Alexis Wright “Carpentaria” is a big novel in every sense.
These novels can be obtained through Dwyer’s Bookstore by the following link. http://www.dwyersbookstore.com.au/title/50/theft

What are ‘reading groups’? A gathering of like-minded friends and associates with the common denominator being their love and fascination of books. ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’, the new book from Khaleid Hasseini author of the ‘Kite Runner’, is a title worth consideration for discussion by your reading group.
At our on-line bookshop you can browse our special section for reading groups for suggested reads. New releases are being added daily. An example can be seen by clicking here http://www.dwyersbookstore.com.au/title/50/shadow_of_the_wind

This is the story of the establishment of Cobb & Co Coaches. They were the only transport during the early settlement of New South Wales when there was little communication between the early settlements and Sydney. In the early days the route to places such as Bathurst and beyond were sparsely settled and these coaches were exposed to bushrangers who held them up - sometimes the gold they were carrying. One well known bushranger was Ben Hall who held up a Cobb & Co coach near the township of Eugowra, in Central NSW. The role of fathers in encouraging their sons to read is often overlooked. It was recently reported that the mere sight of seeing the head of the house sitting and enjoying a novel simply for pleasure was a rare event. Just seeing their father relaxing after dinner with a good book (the TV turned down or off) may well establish better reading habits by their sons.
Boys who do not have this role model will inevitably not form good reading habits. Fathers who read will often create boys reading habits which will stand them in good stead in their future life. Encouraging fathers and sons to have a time set aside will encourage excellent habits and lead to discovering the world of information and ideas waiting to be found within the covers and through local libraries.
Some suggested titles which will possibly get males reading and start this good reading habit are listed below…
Bad Luck & Trouble http://www.dwyersbookstore.com.au/title/50/bad_luck_and_trouble
Rocking Wall Street by Marks http://www.dwyersbookstore.com.au/title/50/rocking_wall_street_four_powerful_strategies

Rex Hunts Fishing Australia http://www.dwyersbookstore.com.au/title/50/rex_hunts_fishing_australia

Happy reading!!

Released in early June, this book was written by David Hill, drawing on his experiences living at Fairbridge Farm.
During the period between 1938 - 1973 more than 1,200 migrant children passed through the gates of Fairbridge Farm located near Molong in central western New South Wales.
This story contains first-hand accounts of life on Fairbridge Farm plus the trip out from England by ship for these very young children. The British Government more recently has made some effort to make amends by paying for these child migrants to return to the United Kingdom and make contact with relatives.
The children often lacked love and affection and the very young pre-school age were left to wander the farm without the TLC expected and taken for granted today.
This book is available now - click here if you would like more information. http://www.dwyersbookstore.com.au/title/50/forgotten_children_the

Well Australia is still the place of drought and flooding rain! With the floods which have been ravaging the eastern coast of New South Wales we could be possibly feeling a little more relaxed about the effects of climate change. However we would be just a little complacent if we thought we will not be short of water again in these areas!
For those who are interested in the environment, a couple of books which are putting forward views on these subjects are by authors Tim Flanner and Clive Hamilton. They have written books to ‘whet’ your appetite on these subjects.
If you would like to expand your understanding of some of the issues we are now currently facing these books are available through Dwyers Bookstore. By clicking on the links below you will be able to read more about both books.
