Set in Dublin at the wake of their brother Liam, the Hegarty children are drawn together once more. Veronica recalls their youth in an attempt to make sense of his life and death. Her memories come back to her in fragments, like dreams, confused and torn. Yet Enright imbues her writing with a sensitivity that marks the contested nature of the past. What emerges is a contrast of beautiful and devastating images - but in both cases quite profoundly expressed.

What happened to Liam in his grandmother's house in the winter of 1968, that contributed to his death? His sister Veronica remembers their family history as she mourns the loss of her brother. Why have three generations endured hurt? An amazing tale of family secrets, love and disappointment. Fate is written in the body, not in the stars.
