Dark complex subplots are cleverly embellished with small town intrigue. A quintessential coastal town in Maine, USA, serves as the windswept landscape for the melting pot dynamics: namely, family betrayal and grief. Strout masterfully utilises the structure of the short story to thrust the reader into the pivotal events that highlight messy lives. Olive, with her profound empathetic nature provides the anchor for the town's revolving stories.
