Rated 8 / 10Both compelling and haunting, the narrative delves into the discriminating forces inherent in a patricarchal society. In Colonial Britain, women who thwarted conventional behaviour were committed to mental institutions by their fathers, husbands or brothers for indefinite periods. Consequently, this is a perfect selection for book clubs as the novel addresses historical and contemporary mental health issues.
